It has now been 4 months since my last post. So much has happened in those 4 months! But overall, I feel like life has finally started to settle down again, and I can resume blogging.

Yesterday, logging in to work, I was greeted by this message in my notification bar:

In October 2015, I signed up for a WordPress.com account to purchase a VideoPress upgrade through the Jetpack plugin. I was building a self-hosted WordPress site for my church, who were hosting an annual national camp the following year. We were hosting over a hundred participants for a four-day camp on our island, and many were travelling interstate. We already had a homepage up and running at the time, and I was looking for a way to easily host videos we were sharing with our guests.

VideoPress is a video hosting solution. It allows you to upload videos through a site’s WordPress interface, but then serves the videos through VideoPress servers. What captured my interest was that the bandwidth to play these videos would be covered over on VideoPress’ side – not on our site. Our site was with a host that charged for additional bandwidth by viewers. I didn’t want our camp participants missing out on the great video resources my team was preparing, because we had used up our bandwidth for the month.

VideoPress is no longer available as a standalone purchase. Instead, it has now become a feature included in the Jetpack plans. It is also included in many of WordPress.com’s plans, too, for no additional cost. (And for those interested, WordPress.com doesn’t limit or charge for bandwidth. So no need for worry there ?)

6 years on, and I am now a Happiness Engineer for WordPress.com, supporting our customers with their site, helping them use the built-in VideoPress features, and am even answering pre-sales questions they may have about bandwidth. What a journey it has been!
